How to Defend Yourself Against An Attacker

The best defense is a good offense; think safety when ever possible.

Unfortunately we don't live in a crime free world and unfortunately any one of us at any time can be attacked.  The best deffense agains being attacked is a good offence.  Always try to avoid walking in dark areas by yourself.  If you are leaving a party, a class, or a meeting at night-time, be sure to walk out at the same time as a group of people or have someone walk you to your car.  Always have your keys ready, and always wear shoes that will make it easy for you to run if need be, even if you have to change right before you walk out the door.

Even if we do take all the safety precautions possible we can still be attacked.  I am going to tell you what to do in case you are ever attacked.

If You Are Ever Attacked Your Brain is Your Best Defense

What ever you do, do not panic; do not shut down. Your attacker is counting on your fear to cripple you. Don't let it. The likelihood of your attacker being stronger is almost certain; therefore your best defense is your mind.  You have to count on the fact that while he is stronger and probably faster than you, that he is probably not smarter than you. The next thing you will need to do is start thinking--start thinking about your options. What is the best way that you can hurt this guy enough so that you can get away?

Taking Down Your Attacker

There are several areas on anyone's body that have the capacity to render them helpless at least long enough for you to run away.

The Nose:  Hitting someone flat in the nose will usually cause their whole face to kind of shrivel up, their eyes will water and will likely be forced shut for at least a couple of minutes, also the hands will tend to fly up there automatically, therefore giving someone a swift hit in the nose will render them helpless for at least a couple of minutes; once you do this, run like the dickens, don't stop to pick anything up, do not look back, just run to the safest place as fast as you can.

The neck or Adam's Apple: Hitting someone in the neck right in the front towards the "Adam's Apple" will disrupt their wind pipe; you could actually kill someone by doing this, but it will at the very least take them out long enough for you to run away.

The knee: If you are able to kick someone square in the front of the knee, causing it to snap backwards, you can do some serious damage; this should take the attacker down, at least long enough for you to run away. Even if he gets up to chase you he will be slowed down, giving you a running advantage. Also, kicking someone square in the back  of the knees will cause them to buckle and go down. Be aware, though, that this will only take them down for a moment.  It might not even give you a chance to run far enough away.  If this is your only option at the moment, think ahead to your next move.

The Eyes:  If your only option is poking your attacker in the eyes then do it.  Likely you will only be able to get at one eye, but it might cause your attacker enough pain to distract him for a moment, at which point you may want to strike him at one of the other places while he is distracted.  Poke him the eye and  kick him the knee, for instance.

Of course, these options may not be possible for you to do. So you must think of your other options--what you have for weapons. Your greatest weapons are your hands, feet, and head. You can also use your purse or shoes as a weapon.

Of course if you are wearing a soft shoe like a tennis shoe you are not likely to do a lot of harm with that, but if you are wearing shoes with a hard bottom, you can use that to kick the attacker in the shin, or ram your heel in to their foot, as they are bending over or wincing in pain take that opportunity to quickly hit them in the nose or the neck. Then run, the kick in the shin or the slamming of the foot will not take them out, this is just a way to distract them long enough to use your next attack; that next attack must be one that will take them out at least for a couple of minutes.

The Ear:  If the only place you can get to is the ear, go for it.  Smack the ear straight on with the palm of your hand as hard as you can or if only your elbow is available use that.  Again this may only distract him for a moment, but if he has got you in a grip then this might be a good way to get him to let loose of you enough to strike him in a more crippling place.

Do What Ever You Can Keep Your Cool and Use Your Head

If you are not in a position where you are able to strike, your finger nails and teeth can also be weapons. Again, using these will not stop him long enough to get away, but it can provide you with an opportunity to get him off guard or to wince in pain for just a moment. Be careful and think before you do this. Because you will need to act very quickly, and you will need to strike him while he is off guard and you will only have a few seconds to do it. In my particular case I saw that he was not guarding his knees and was not even thinking about his knees, that is when I decided that I had a good shot at pouncing on the knees, and I knew that would take him out. If you are down on the ground and you have some way to bear down on his knees, take that opportunity. You can also do this to the groin, the groin area will hurt him, although a man who is full of adrenaline might not be as affected by this as you might think; but it may give you enough of a chance to either run or to strike him somewhere else.

Probably one of the worst things an attacker can do to you is to pull your hand behind your back in a way that in painful to you. This is very painful and can render you quite helpless. If the man is not that much taller than you, you can try slamming your head back in to his face; otherwise you might have to wait until he takes you down to make your move, just constantly keep thinking, and wait for that moment when he relinquishes hold, then use whatever you have to strike.  If you are in a backward position, and can not get to his knees, but he has his face near your head, use your head on his face; your head is stronger than his face.

Think look around and weigh your options.

The exception to this is if you are being threatened with a gun. If you are threatened with a gun your best option is to do what you are told and cooperate, unless the attacker provides you with an opportunity to attack, but all in all the best thing to do is cooperate.

If someone is holding a gun on you and asking you to give them your purse or your car, just do it. No purse or car is worth your life. You have insurance, you can get another car, you can get another purse, those things are replaceable; you are not. Just cooperate; there is no reason to fight.

In some situations doing nothing is your best defense. Sometimes just cooperating will be the best thing for you to do. Unless you feel your life is in danger and you feel that you have no angle to fight back it might be best to cooperate. Again use your mind to make this decision. If you are thinking with a clear head you might decide that this is the best course of action.

If you feel your life is danger, however, do whatever you can to fight and get away. Never ever let someone get you into a vehicle or into a building, do whatever you can to keep that from happening, even if you have to kick, thrash, and punch like a wild woman. Hit him with your hands, your feet, your head, your butt, your legs, your elbows, what ever you have to fight with; kick, wiggle, and thrash, put up as much fight as you possibly can. Scream your head off all the while, never stop hoping that someone might come to your aid. You might possibly be able to wiggle out of his grip, then you can run or attack him.

Of course the best defense is offense. I believe that all women should carry pepper spray and a personal alarm with them. If you are somewhere walking alone at any time, but especially in the dark, you should be walking with your pepper spray in your hand ready to do use. Your pepper spray should be on your key chain, so that your keys are in your hand and ready to open your car door quickly if need be. Your personal alarm should also be in easy reach, I hang mine on my purse strap. Most car companies now have a panic button on the key thing now, but that panic button is very small and would be hard to find in an emergency. A personal alarm is still a good thing to have.

Remember to always try and keep yourself safe and if you are attacked you must think of mind over matter.  If you use your head you will be better off in the situation.
